Mary Anne GILBERT & Joseph HOWLETT ... - ... Work in Progress . . .

Mary Anne Gilbert born 10th January 1790 to Robert Gilbert and Mary Kent.

Mary Anne and her twin Sister Rebekah Isabell were baptised 12 Jan 1790 in Banham, Norfolk.

On 26th May 1813, in Banham, Mary Anne married Joseph Howlett.

Both of the Parish.

I have not been able to find out any more about Joseph Howlett eg when and where he was born and who his parents were.

I have also not been able to find out what happened to Rebecca Isabella.

1841 Census shows "Mary" Howlett, a Laundress living in Charles Street, St Giles Cripplegate [Middlesex].

I believe this is the correct entry as the age ties up, it states not born in Middlesex and with her is William Gilbert, an Engineer age 21 also not born in Middlesex.

1851 and Mary Anne is back in Banham, living in Church Street with her Son George who was born in London.

"Niece" Rebecca is Mary Anne's Granddaughter.

Later on Rebecca ran a Lodging House in St James's Place in London.

1861 Mary Anne has her Granddaughter Euphemia with her.

I like to imagine the relationship between Rebecca and Euphemia and their Granny who ran a Sweet Shop.

Euphemia, who never married, went on to be in business in Shoreditch, London with her Brother Henry Charles Emmanual.

1871 Back Road Attleborough

Back Road Attleborough is a very small road and there is an old cottage - I wonder if this is where she lived?

It is possible that Mary Anne died in April 1871- just after the time the Census was taken.

Children of Mary Anne Gilbert and Joseph Howlett.

Following on from their marriage on 26th May 1813 which, it appears, took place at St Mary's Church in Kenninghall, we find that they were Baptists.

The earlier generations of the Gilbert family are buried at Kenninghall Baptist Church

but, the marriage of Mary Anne and Joseph does not appear to be recorded there.

[Freereg]

Kenninghall Particular Baptist Church

Their children were:

1813

WILLIAM

Father Joseph a Blacksmith and Mother Mary Gilbert.

Baptised at Kenninghall Particular Baptist Church 14th October 1813.

Found on FreeReg and:

1817

On 3rd May 1817 again at the Kenninghall Particular Baptist Church

DAVID WILLIAM

was baptised Son of Joseph a Blacksmith and Mother Mary Gilbert.

1822

Baptised at the Particular Baptist of Kenninghall

MARY ANNE

Father Joseph a Blacksmith and Mother Mary Gilbert.

No evidence to prove she was born in Bury St Edmunds as stated on Census.

1825

ROBERT was born 23 Nov 1825

On records of Kenninghall Particular Baptist Church on Freereg

Father a Blacksmith. Baptised [again?] on15th Jun 1834 at St Giles Without Cripplegate.

Son of Joseph an Engineer and Mary. Abode: Red Cross Street.

1828

GEORGE born 22/24th Aug 1828.

On records of Kenninghall Particular Baptist Church on Freereg.

Father Joseph a Blacksmith. Baptised [again?] on 19th Apr 1837 at St Giles Without Cripplegate, of Joseph a Smith and Mary Anne. Abode Red Cross Street.

So it appears Joseph was a Blacksmith in Kenninghall at least up until sometime before 1834 - and then, an Engineer [1834] and a Smith [Blacksmith or other? 1837] and an Engineer [1840 - marriage record for Daughter Mary Anne]

So, sometime between the baptism of George in Kenninghall in 1828 and the second baptism of Robert in 1834. The family must have moved to London.

No further trace or records of William nor David William has been found to date [May 2022]

Mary Anne Howlett b1822 married Robert Ackland-Snow in 1840 at St Luke's in Finsbury.

Not found on the 1841 Census but possibly in Goswell Street - the part of the 1841 Census for Goswell Street is listed as missing.

1851 She is living back in Kenninghall in Market Place with her husband Robert a Braizer and Tin Plate Worker and their children.

Cannot find the family on the 1861 Census.

1871 Living at 75 Worship Street, Shoreditch.

1881 Mary Anne is living at 13 Stamford Rd., St John Hackney with her Son Henry Charles Emmanuel and Daughter Euphemia.

For some reason I cannot imagine she was baptised at All Saints, Clapton Park Hackney" /Clapton Park All Saints Hackney:

"Mary Anne (Ackland-Snow) widow b 22nd April 1821

Parents Joseph & Mary Anne Howlett

Abode 10 [or 18?] Cambridge Place" [Cambridge Place is now Norfok Square]

The top of the relevant page [found on Ancestry website]

states the "Parish of All Saint's Paddington"

Again, I can't find her on the 1891 Census - however, she died on 9th May 1891

at 6 Liverpool Road, Islington - the home of her Daughter Grace Golding.

Robert Howlett b1825

He was baptised twice: first at the Particular Baptist Church in Kenninghall in Norfolk - Father Joseph a Blacksmith and Mother Mary Ann Gilbert dob 23rd Nov 1825

[found on FreeReg website]

and again at Saint Giles Cripplegate, London. The Register for St Giles states baptised 15th June 1834 but also the birth date of 23rd Nov 1825.

Parents Joseph an Engineer and Mary of Red X Street [sic] = Red Cross Street.

Robert migrated to USA.

The 1900 Census, gives year of migration as 1856.

An 1842 passenger list for the ship Hendrick Hudson shows a Robert Howlett age 18.

He married to Hannah Ann Lippincott in 1848 so this would tie up that he migrated

1842 and not 1856.

1850 He is listed in Pike County, Illinois, USA and as Robert W Howlett age 24.

Address is Township 4 S 6 W, Pike.

Occupation: Tinner and Industry: Fabricated Steel Products.

1860 he was in Hannibal, Marion, Missouri. Again as Robert W Howlett age 34.

Occupation: Gun Smith.

1863 He was back in Pike County as he is listed on the US Civil War Draft Registrations Records - Age 37 and a Gunsmith.

In the column "Previous Service" it States: "Mex" and I cannot read the next word/abbreviation.

There are also references found online to the Mexican War:

"During the month of May, 1846, the President called for four regiments of volunteers from Illinois for the Mexican war." and:

1846 - 1847 • Mexican War - Eight of our citizens: Alfred Blair, R. W. Howlett, B. T. Gray, Calvin Davis, N. P. Hart, Jack Jennings, John Arnett and Jacob Seybold participated in the war with Mexico.

Apparently, settled in Pike County: in 1870 he is in Barry, Age 49, place of birth England and Occupation Tinner Works and 1880 in Barry, Age 55 and a Gunsmith.

However, at the time of the 1900 Census he is living with his Son Fred -1409 Belleveiw Ave Kansas City Missouri.

Robert died 30th January 1903 in Barry, Pike County and is buried Park Lawn Cemetery

Robert's Son Robert was a Brick Maker - as were his Gilbert Ancestors back in Norfolk.
