Not My Family: A few things I have stumbled upon . . .

Strother Allen was a Cheesemonger - listed in The Universal British Directoy of 1791 at 103 Whitechapel. Around the same time period 1784-1791 he is also in the indexes to directories [found on Ancestry.co.ok - original image not available] at 93 and 94 Whitechapel road and No.101, Whitechapel high street.

Strother Allen was born in Northumberland c1752 and married at Saint Leonards,Shoreditch in 1780 and died in 1789 aged about 37.

On 23rd July 1783 a case was heard at the Old Bailey:

John Hague was charged with stealing a ham from Strother Allen's shop in Whitechapel.

John Hague pleaded his case which included the statement: "I was acting under the first lieutenant of the Princess Royal, commanded by Admiral Barrington"

The sentence was to be whipped.

On 25th June 1788 a case was heard at the Old Bailey:

William Eaton was charged with stealing a cheese from Strother Allen's shop in Whitechapel.

Two things occur as noteworthy: firstly that William Eaton committed a very similar crime some 5 years later stealing a cheese rather than a ham and on both occasions the property was dropped by the thief when running away from the shop - why then was William Eaton transported for 7 years?

The second thing is the coincidence that John Hague had worked on the Admiral Barrington which was the ship on which William Eaton was transported.

The rest the say is history:

William Eaton's life in Australia, after his transportation, being well documented.
