John Philpot Jones - a Hampstead Gardener, Henry Sweet & others

[Please Note: this is not about John Philpott Jones, the Architect]

John Philpott Jones [hereinafter referred to as JP] was the Son and eldest child of John Philpott Jones, a School Master and Ann Philpott -

[I have not been able to untangle the Philpott name which crops up several times on the Jones family tree].

Born in Stanford, Kent and baptised there on 3rd March 1833 he was the Grandson of my 4th Great Grandparents: John Jones and Elizabeth Gammon.

For the first part of his life, JP lived in Stan[d]ford Street, Stanford, with his parents and younger siblings Charles, William, Jane, Sarah, Julius, Alfred and Martha.

In 1851, at the age of 18, he was working as an Agricultural Labourer there.

He must have left home sometime after that, as in 1860 he married Martha Dawson at St Georges Chapel in the District of Old Brentford in Middlesex.

At the time of their marriage, JP was aged 28 and Martha 30.

Martha's Father is listed as Charles Dawson, a Farmer.

On the 1861 Census it states Martha's place of birth was Staffordshire and what I believe could be Cheddleton [St Edward]. There is a Baptism for a Martha, Daughter of Charles and Elizabeth in Cheddleton, Staffordshire 25th October 1829 - date of birth 2nd May.

She may also be the Martha shown working as a Servant in Eaves, Staffs in 1851.

The Census for that year also shows Charles Dawson, a Farmer of 44 Acres and his Wife Elizabeth in Round Meadow, Cheddleton and in 1841, at the same address, with children including Martha age 12 [b1829].

So. sometime after 1851, Martha must have moved from Staffordshire to Old Brentford [Hounslow] in Middlesex - perhaps, for a job in Service?

Ages for Martha do not tie up but it is possible the age was rounded to 30 on the Census or maybe she took a couple of years off because she was a bit older than JP.

It appears that JP and Martha only had the one child, Julia born 15th September 1861 and baptised October 2th at St John's in Hamptstead.

The Census for 1861 shows them living at 23 Flask Walk in Hampstead.

At the same address are George Street, a Dairyman and Henry Riddles, a Metropolitan Police Constable.

From the time of his marriage to Martha in 1860 and from then on JP was a Gardener.

Martha must have died sometime before1865 as JP married again, in Faringdon District in Berkshire, to Ann Walklett* who was from Ashbury in Berkshire. Ann and her elder Sister Maria were both working as a House Servants in Melcombe Regis in Dorset in 1851.

But by 1861 she had moved to Hampstead where, presumably, she later met JP.

Listed as a General Servant at the home of Walter Briggs a Chemist.

The address looks like London ? Telegraph Office and was at 49 the High Street. adjacent to Minerva Place which was where Hampstead Underground Station is now.

Number 49 and Minerva Place therefore both long gone.

JP and Ann had four children Horatia, Sarah W and Annie L and Herbert Henry.

Ann Walklett* Her Sister Maria married Edwin Miller. She died about 8 years later, he went on to re-marry and became a Coachman to the Queen [Victoria] for many years and a lot more information may be found about him online.

In 1871 JP was now living in "Heath Street" with Wife Ann, Daughter Julia [from his Marriage to Martha], Daughters Sarah and Ann and a Servant.

No number is given on the Census page for the house in Heath Street but it is next door to Stamford Lodge* [a lodging house] and in between numbers 34 and 36.

So it looks like JP was at number 35 which is now number 118 - Heath Street.

*The Quaker Meeting House is now on the site of what was Stamford Lodge.

1876 saw the death of both JP's Mother Ann and his Wife Ann.

Wife Ann possibly died from complications of childbirth as Son Herbert Henry was also born the same year.

Announced in a newspaper of 1879:

"Oct 8 at Faversham Church. Mr. John Philpott Jones of Middlesex to Elizabeth Jane Kingsnorth of Faversham." [Kent]

So in 1881, still at "35 Heath Street", again next door to Stamford Lodge - JP was now with Wife Elizabeth, Daughters Horatia and Annie [from his second marriage to Ann] and baby Ellen - 4 months old.

AND Henry Sweet* [shown on the next page of the Census Return]

His Occupation: Master of Arts Literature.

Number 118 Heath Street was also named Mansfield Cottage and JP is listed as living there in an Electoral Register of 1889.

Elizabeth would have been about 42 when Walter George was born in 1884 and JP was about 52 years old.

1891 and the address is now 118 Heath Street [and still next to Stamford Lodge] So the same property that was listed as number 35 in previous Census Returns.

JP is with Wife Elizabeth Jane, Daughters: Horatia a Ladies Maid, Ann, a Dressmaker, Son Herbert Henry, a Grocers Assistant, and youngest children: Ellen and Walter both at school.

Also: Lodgers Thomas L Crosse and Claude ? Cross who were both Clerks in a Public Company.

JP's Father John Philpot Jones the School Master died in 1895 in Elham in Kent.

1901 still living at "118 Heath Street" as per the previous Census [1891] are JP, his Wife Elizabeth Jane, Herbert Henry a Hotel Porter, Ellen, Walter a Junior Clerk and four borders:

Edward Martin Swift an Electrical Engineers Clerk from Camden Town, Alfred Clements born Hampstead, a Secretary to a Limited Company, Thomas Watson a Photographer, from Whitby in Yorkshire who, soon after, returned to Yorkshire and Robert Davies Roberts a Bank Clerk born in Wales.

Still at "118 Heath Street" in 1911. The next property on this Census is Northcote House which was the other side of the road named "Hampstead Square" to Stamford Lodge so this still ties up as correct. Indicating that JP lived in the same house from from at least 1871-1911 and possible up until his death which may have been in 1916 but is yet to be confirmed.

With JP in 1911 are Wife Elizabeth, they have now been married for 31 years, Daughter Ellen [no Occupation], Son Walter George, an Ironmonger and Boarders:

Evelyn Victor Craig Chenery a Clerk (Civil Service) Board of Trade (Exhibition Branch), Frank Arthur Bailey a Clerk in employment of the General Reversionary and Investment Company at 62 Pall Mall, William Busby* a Visitor who was a Timber Merchants Clerk.

William Busby* William James Busby later married JP's Daughter Ellen

Evelyn Victor Craig Chenery's Mother divorced from his Father and re-married in 1893 to George Palgrave Simpsom. Evelyn was about 5 years old at the time and appears to have, subsequently sometimes, gone under the name Evelyn Victor Craig Chenery Palgrave Simpson [but not on the 1911 Census].

He was a Lieutenant in the Royal Field Artillery during WW1 ["C" Bty. 77th Bde.] and was killed on 25th November 1918.

He is buried with his Mother and others in Hampstead Cemetery.

Frank Arthur Bailey was in WW1 married and moved to Kent.
