Orlo:


Orlo Steadmans/Stedman was born on 27th June 1845 in Stanford, Kent and christened at the Wesleyan Chapel.

Her Father was George Steadmans, a butcher.

On the 1851 and 1861 Census Orlo is living with her family in Stanford.

Her siblings were: Ann, Laura, Arthur and Edwin.

Orlo married George Charles Harding at All Saints Church, Stanford on 27th June 1865.

They had fourteen children: George Charles 3rd born 1866 in Folkstone, Maude Emma 1868 in Ashford, Orlo Susannah 1869 in Willesborough, Arthur Raymond 1871 in Ashford, Rosalie Adsey 1873, Charlotte Amy 1875, Jessie May 1877, Wilfred James 1879, Gertrude Irene 1881, Herbert Keeler 1883, Alfred Frederick 1885, Walter Benjamin 1886, Mildred Emily 1890 and Marshall John 1892 all in South Croydon.

In 1871 Orlo and George Charles are living in Tufton? Road, Ashford in Kent.


By the time of the 1881 census they are at 17 Haling Road in South Croydon.

George Charles and son, George Charles, both listed as carpenters.

Maude is already a domestic servant at the age of twelve!

1891 Census their address is 174 Selsdon Road Croydon: sons George Charles and Arthur Carpenters like their Father and Rosalie a Domestic.

1901 at 33 Helder Street Croydon [need to check address street renamed/renumbered?]. Daughter Jessie is a Dressmaker and Gertie a Cashier Clerk.

Information from family members:

Orlo was a Teacher at the local school before her marriage.

"Aunt Millie" said that her Mother, Orlo, wrote poetry which was read to the children when small. She must have been a very gentle kind person from all accounts, her daughters: Gertie, Millie, Jessie and Lottie always spoke of her with great affection.

In later life they lived at a cottage built by George Charles 2nd called ‘The Homestead’ which was located in Warren Street, Lenham in Kent.

They had a pony and trap and a dog called Podger.

Orlo died on 2nd January 1918 and was buried at the Mitcham Road Cemetery in Croydon:Grave number 9799.
