Alice Blanche Mullins, daughter of Henry Mullins and Elizabeth Shirley was born on 3rd October 1879. One of four children, her sister Elizabeth was two years older than Alice, Emma Blanch the second child about a year older and Henry who was two years younger.

baptisms. Alice was born at 11 Overstone Road, Hammersmith and the family are listed as being at that address on the 1881 Census with father Henry's Occupation being a Piano Forte Finisher.
Currently, there is no trace of them on the 1891 Census, however, in 1901 all the family, except Alice, were living at 4 Flora Gardens in Hammersmith. Sisters Elizabeth and Emma were both Dressmakers and Brother Henry, a Carpenter. In November 1897, a month after her 18 birthday, Alice married Frederick at the United Methodist Free Church in Epsom, Surrey. Frederick would have been nearly 24 years old then. I had previously thought that it was likely that Alice met Frederick because they were both living in the same area. Frederick with his parents at number 61 Glenthorne Road and his Father's business was under the railway arches in Cambridge Road. Overstone Road, where Alice was born, runs off Glenthorne Road a couple of streets away from Cambridge Road. Then, a recent discovery [2017] of a newspaper article in the West London Observer dated 15th October 1897: THE ROBBERY OF TOOLS - Richard Batstone, of Kilburn, was re-examined on the charge of stealing three iron crumps [?] and one smoothing plane, value £3 from 64 [or 61] Railway Arch, Cambridge Road, Hammersmith, the property of his employer, Henry Mullins, a pianoforte maker, of Flora Gardens, - The pawnbrokers now produced the tools which had been pledged, but the could not recognise the prisoner - However, he said he pledged the tools with the idea of getting them out before they were missed - Sergt Allen said the prisoner bore a bad character. He had given way to drink - Mr Rose committed the prisoner for two months, and ordered the tools to be given up. So, it appears that Alice and Frederick probably met because their respective Fathers were both in business under the railway arches. Alice and Frederick were married in Epsom. On their marriage certificate it states that Frederick was living at 155 High Street, Sutton and Alice in West Street, Carshalton. Frederick's Aunt Florence and her husband Percy, who lived in Carshalton, were the witnesses at the wedding. As his birth was registered in Epsom it appears that Alice may have stayed with Florence and Percy until their first child Fred was born at the beginning of June 1898 . A year and 2 days later their second child, Florence, was born in Hammersmith. Then at the end of November 1900 Percy was born, also in Hammersmith. The 1901 Census shows Alice and Frederick living at 64 Drayton Road Ealing with Florence aged 2 and Percy 7 months. Son, Frederick Charles is listed as being with them but is also listed in Carshalton with Frederick's Aunt Florence this is correct as we know Florence and her husband Percy adopted baby Fred. Possibly at Drayton Road, because the birth was registered in Ealing, Alice and Frederick's daughter Editha was born in September 1902 and then Dorothy in 1903. The beginning of 1905 saw the death of Alice's Mother, Elizabeth Shirley. Between 1903 and early 1905 Alice and Frederick must have moved to 14 Herbert Road, Ilford where in July 1905 Arthur was born. Then, another move as in August 1907 Alice and Frederick are shown as living at 7 West Road, Shoeburyness on the birth certificate of their daughter Hilda Eveline. Frederick's occupation then was Builder and Painter. Sometime after August 1907 they must have moved again as in January 1909 Hilda Eveline died, possibly at 64 Chase Side, Enfield where their next child Bertram was born in March 1909. The Baptism entry for Bertram on 23rd July 1909 has a "P" in the margin, indicating it was a private baptism. Private baptisms were used for babies who weren't expected to survive long enough to make it to the church. The address on the Baptism record is No.4 Stewart's Cottages, Wandle Road, Beddington and Frederick at this time is stated as being a Painter Journeyman. So, it appears that between January and March 1909 they had moved from Enfield to Beddington. In April 1909 their eldest child Frederick Charles Harry was baptised at All Saints Carshalton but the home address was Enfield, Middlesex and Father Frederick is listed as "Arthur" and his Occupation, a Gasfitter. They were still living in Beddington in August 1910 when their son Walter Whittlesey was baptised and the address again recorded as No. 4 Wandle Road, Hackbridge. Walter died later the same month. Frederick's occupation was now stated as Plumber. On the 1911 Census the family are living at 62 Mill Lane, Carshalton with five children: Florence, Percy, Editha, Dorothy and Arthur. Frederick a Plumber and Gasfitter. Eldest son Fred, now aged 12, is still with his Aunt and Uncle in Carshalton. Then in September 1911 another son, Frank was born at 62 Mill Lane. By August 1913 there appears to have been yet another move as Alice and Frederick's eleventh child, Violet Naomi, was baptised at All Saints Carshalton and the home address was London House, West Street. Frederick was a Builder according to the baptism record however, in the 1913 Edition of Kelly's Dirctory for Carshalton is listed Arthur Ackland-Snow Newsagent, West Street. Back to Hammersmith and son Philip was born in April 1915. Sometime in the first 3 months of 1915 Violet Naomi died at the Western Hospital, Seagrave Road, Fulham. The address on Violet's death certificate was 23 Miles Street. At Hammersmith Archives there is a rate book and for April 1914 there is the following entry: No 1 Collecting District – 16.6.1915 – Arthur Snow 23 Miles St – Owner Laura Smith – Rates 5 pounds 14s 4d – arrears one pound one shilling and 3d – Total payable 6 pounds 15s 7d – actually collected 4 pounds 11s 6d. In the rate book for October 1914 the name Ernest Bailey is crossed out and Arthur Snow written next to it. Previous research revealed Frederick listed in the Post Office Directory as being a builder at 52 Scrutton Street, Shoreditch from 1910 until at least 1917. Number 52 being previously occupied by Mrs Elizabeth Whittlesey & Sons, Corn dealers - Elizabeth Whittlesey being Frederick's Grandmother. It was said that Frederick had a workshop in Scrutton Street, opposite a pub in which he spent a lot of time. There appears to have been some kind of drinking establishment, if not an actual pub at number 42 Scrutton Street opposite the end of of Phipps St/Motely Ave so this may have been the place. Frederick's Great Aunt, Priscilla Whittlesey, his Grandmother's sister did not approve of alcoholic drink and for this reason did not like Frederick. Frederick would have been familiar with Worship Street as his Uncle Henry and Aunt Euphemia, brother and sister to Frederick's Father Matthew had a business in Worship Street for many years. So despite Alice and Frederick moving house so often he appears to have been working most of the time in Shoreditch, first in Scrutton Street and later in Worship Street. Alice and Frederick's last child, Eileen was born at the end of February 1918, in Hammersmith and at the end of that year son Percy enlisted in the RAF. The Electoral Roll for 1919 lists Alice and Frederick at 34 Dorville Road, Hammersmith. In September 1919 eldest son Frederick was married and then in November the same year, Percy also married. A 1921 Business Directory of London has Frederick & Son at Motley Avenue, 2 Scrutton Street, Shoreditch and in 1925 Alice and Frederick are listed in the Electoral Roll at the rear of 57 Scrutton Street, which may be the same premises as the Motley Avenue address and been re-numbered. Their home address was still Dorville Road. Frederick Alice and Percy are listed in the Register of Electors for 1924 at 34 Dorville Road. In 1925 Daughter Florrie married. Alice died on Wednesday 14th October 1925 at Guy’s Hospital in Southwark, she was just 46 years old. Her home address was 34, Dorville Road and she was buried on the 20th October 1925 in Hammersmith Cemetery, now known as Margravine Cemetery. The grave is a private grave one with no marker. It was purchased by Frederick on the death of Alice and the ownership died with him. At the time of her death Phil was 10 and Eileen just seven years old and Alice had two Grand daughters aged five and four and a two year old grandson. Notices in the West London Observer newspaper of 23rd October 1925 were as follows: ACKNOWLEDGMENTS : MR ACKLAND SNOW and family beg to thank friends for the lovely wreaths and kind sympathy in their recent sad bereavement.
