Thomas Mullins: Stay Maker.

Possibly born about 1792 . . . . In the 1822 and 1823 Pigot's Directories, listed under "Stay and Corset Makers" there is a Thomas Mullins at 35 Rathbone Place, London.

Rathbone Place is between Fitzrovia and Soho, South of St Pancras. London Gazette 1833 The Court for Relief of Insolvent Debtors. "Thomas Mullins formerly of No. 35 Rathbone Place, Oxford Street Mary-le-Bone, Middlesex, his wife carrying on the business of a Stay-Maker, in which he assisted her, and late of No. 74 Warren Street, Fitzroy Square, Middlesex, Dealer in Coals, Charcoal, Coke and Wood, and of No. 35 Rathbone Place Oxford Street Mary-le-Bone Middlesex his wife carrying on the business of a Stay- Maker."

Records show three children: Thomas, Sarah and Sophia all baptised at the same time at St George's Bloomsbury on 10th March 1824.

Parents: Thomas, a Stay Maker and Sophia of Rathbone Place.

St George, Bloomsbury is just south of St Pancras.

I can find no trace of Thomas Mullins marriage to Sophia......surname unknown. In the 1839 Pigot's Directory: listed under Stay Makers, Thomas Mullins at 223 Tottenham Court Road - Possibly our man. On the marriage certificate of Thomas and Sophia's son, Thomas, to Mary Ann Eastman in 1840, Thomas the Father is recorded as a Stay Maker. The 1861 Census for St Marylebone Workhouse shows Thomas Mullins, A Pauper, Staymaker, unmarried, age 69 and born in Aldgate Minories. Also, an entry for the same person Thomas Mullins: occupation Stay Maker, single, age 74 died at St Marylebone Infirmary on 19 May 1866. Another register entry states cause of death "decay of nature" also age 74. This would make him born in 1792. At this stage I cannot confirm these entries are for Thomas Mullins, Stay Maker, the Father of Thomas Mullins a Cab Man, born 1818, who married Mary Ann Eastman.

Thomas the Cab Man and Mary Ann Eastman were the parents of my Great Great Grandfather Father: Henry Mullins, Piano Forte Maker, born 1851. To be continued . . . . Continued as: "Ancestors of Henry Mullins: Father of my Great Grandmother, Alice Mullins" post April 2020
